Who are they?

A duo from Turkey. 

Why I like it
The rhythm is very driven and hypnotic (I love it when the drums are loud in the mix) and I enjoy the vocals. 

Staying Power

They don’t seem to be active anymore, but one of the two members, Gaye Su Akyol has an interesting solo project.

Who is he?
A multiinstrumentalist and singersongwriter from Japan.

Why I like it
This is very catchy and a lot of fun, I love it.

#9: Vaadat Charigim

Who are they?
A shoegaze trio from Israel. Their latest album came out last year and is called Sinking as a Stone.

Why I like it
Shoegaze is a genre I enjoy quite a bit, so obviously I like this take on it too. It’s very summery and probably cool to see live.
Their lyrics are in Hebrew, but some of them are explained here by their singer/guitarist.

Staying Power
I’ll probably listen to their latest album.

#8: Irene Diaz

Who is she?
An singersongwriter from LA who so far has released a couple of EPs and working on her first album.

Why I like it
She has a very beautiful bluesy voice who writes diverse and often genre hopping songs.

#7: PWR BTTM

Who are they?
A genderqueer punkband from the USA. Their first record, Ugly Cheeries, was released last year.

Why I like it
Very punky and catchy with humrous lyrics. Both members also have a great fashion sense!

Probably, I am keen on listening to more of their stuff!

#6: Mashrou’ Leila

Who are they?
A band from Beirut, Lebanon. They currently have four albums out and their latest one (called Ibn El Leil) was released on the European label Pias.

Why I like it
They are a rockband in the broadest sense of the word, with a very rich and interesting instrumentation. Their lyrics are in arabic, which is a beautiful language I do not understand. They deal with gender, homosexuality and love. Translations can be found on their blog

Staying Power
Definitely. They are visting a city near me later this year, I’ll probably go!

#5: Allo Darlin’

Who are they?
An Australian / English band from London. They release their music on Fortuna Pop and Slumberland.

Why I like it
First band I have heard the name of before but never got around to checking out.
I’ve got a thing for cute jinglyjangly indiepop that is very catchy. Always have and probably always will.

#4: Blitz the Ambassador

Who is he?
A Ghanaian/American visual and hiphop artist. He has released 3 albums so far, his latest being Afropolitan Dreams. His music is relased on his own record label, Embassy MVMT.

Why I like it
He has a great band, featuring several brass instruments and a wonderful bass. His lyrics are very political.

Staying Power
I’d love to see him live!

#3: Molina y los Còsmicos

Who are they?
A indie/folk band from Uruguay with 5 members. At this point they have released 2 albums. Their latest is called El Folk de la Frontera.

Why I like it
Indiefolk has for a long time been my favourite genre. Both the vocalist voices are very nice. It’s nothing “new” or innovative but quite beautiful.

#2: Mirel Wagner

Who is she?
An Ethiopian born singersongwriter who grew up in Finland. Her album has the wonderful title When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day

Why I like it
I’ve always had a thing for minimalistic singersongwriters who rely on their voice, guitar and poetic lyrics, so it’s pretty obvious that I like this. Her voice is in the lower register which I also tend to favor.

Staying Power
Maybe. I will probably acquire the album and go see her live in concert if she comes to my parts of the world.

#1: Briana Marela

Who is she?
Briana Marela is a singer songwriter from from Seattle, WA. Her latest album is called All Around Us and came out in 2015 on Jagjaguwar.

Why I like it
These are incredibly calm and haunting songs with beautiful vocals. This is the first artist I picked via the KEXP live performances podcast and definitely a winner.

Staying Power
I am probably going to check out the latest album at some point and defintely will return to listening to the session.
